A mother has been arrested for burning her daughter with an electric iron in Lagos, Nigeria.
Ayo Sheriff, 30, used an electric iron to burn Aishat Sheriff, 16, at their home over a minor misunderstanding.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, Aishat, a secondary school student and a part-time student auxillary nurse, was given 500 Naira by her boss to give 200 Naira to someone on her way home, use 50 Naira for her transport, and return the balance of 250 Naira the following day.
However, Aishat came to work the following day without the balance and when her boss asked her for the money, she claimed it was with her mother. The boss reportedly called Aishat's mother to ask about the money but Ayo Sheriff knew nothing about it.
When Aishat returned home from work, her mother plugged in an iron and burnt her arm and thighs "for being a disgrace to the family".
The incident was reported to the police by Chosen Child Orphanage Home in Ijora-Badia and Ayo Sheriff was arrested.
A statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, stated that the Lagos state Commissioner of Police "was miffed at the sight of of the horrible wounds inflicted on a child by her mother. He therefore called on parents to correct their children in love.
"He said the rate at which cases of domestic violence is increasing is now a source of concern to the Command."
The Gender Section of the Command, headed by SP(Mrs) Adejoke Cole, has concluded investigation into the case and would charge the suspect to Ikeja Magistrate Court tomorrow 30th April, 2018.
